Abstract
The German Training System and the World of Work: The Transfer Potential of the Lernfeldkonzept
This paper examines the ways in which initial vocational training in Germany is connected to the world of work. The investigation is based on a short analysis of the structures and principles of the German training system. Potential and problematic connections between the training system and the world of work are outlined in terms of relevant institutional and curricular aspects. On this basis, the concept of ‘areas of learning' ( Lernfeldkonzept ) is introduced as a curricular innovation that can potentially contribute to bridging the gap between school-based vocational training and the challenges of the world of work.
